BREAKING NEWS:
President Trump said the United States would help Russia amid concerns over a possible pneumonic plague case.
Trump said the U.S. would help Russia “as much as we can.”
Trump said he had not spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the situation.
International concern increased after a Russian laboratory worker reportedly died following possible exposure to plague bacteria.
The worker, Darya Shipilova, worked at the Research Anti-Plague Institute of Siberia.
There has been no official confirmation that Shipilova died from pneumonic plague.
Russian health authorities said she died from “pneumonia of unknown etiology.”
Testing reportedly found no pathogen tied to her work.
Five hospitals in the area and dozens of institute workers have been quarantined as a precaution.
No additional deaths or illnesses connected to the incident have been reported.
Trump said microbes and germs have become stronger, appearing to reference concerns about antimicrobial resistance.
Pneumonic plague remains treatable with antibiotics when diagnosed early.
The White House is monitoring the situation, with the Department of Health and Human Services and State Department on alert.
The European Commission is also closely monitoring the suspected outbreak.
