Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin revealed that federal agents executed multiple search warrants in an investigation into possible immigration fraud involving Rep. Ilhan Omar’s family, describing the case as “strong” and saying investigators expect to present their findings to a grand jury. Omar denies wrongdoing and accuses the Trump administration of political targeting, but the investigation continues as authorities examine whether alleged violations could be connected to a broader conspiracy.
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin confirmed that federal agents executed multiple search warrants on the same day authorities searched Ilhan Omar’s Washington, D.C., residence.
Mullin described the investigation as a “strong case” and said investigators would not proceed unless they believed it could be pursued without political influence.
Investigators expect to present their findings to a grand jury, according to Mullin.
The investigation concerns possible immigration fraud involving documents submitted by Omar’s family decades ago, including paperwork completed by her late father during her childhood.
Multiple relatives of Omar reportedly received grand jury subpoenas, and sources told CBS News that DHS took the congresswoman’s personal cellphone.
Mullin raised the possibility that alleged immigration fraud involving multiple individuals could be investigated under federal racketeering laws, including RICO, but did not confirm that Omar faces such charges.
President Trump previously criticized Omar but said the investigation was up to the Justice Department.
Omar has accused the Trump administration of weaponizing federal law enforcement against political opponents and has denied wrongdoing.
Omar has not been charged with a crime, and prosecutors have not publicly confirmed that they intend to pursue RICO charges against her.
